Web Enhanced Services Logo

We discussed the following topics:

  • The Element app and joined some of our members to our new private encrypted room "Gympie Digital Privacy U.G".
  • Ad blocking to prevent tracking. Discussed uBlock Origin, Firefox, LibreWolf (built in), and Brave (similar out of the box).
  • Importance of password management and two factor authentication (2FA). Talked about KeePassXC and Bitwarden.
  • Discussed mobile phone models for de-googling and identified the range of google Pixel models suitable.

See below for descriptions and further info and links.

So for those of you that did not make this meetup, the way to get onto the Element room is to send a message to me (I am webenhanced:matrix.org) so I have your username, and I then invite you to the room.

For the ad blocking software, the uBlock Origin can be found here and installed in firefox from there or through search in the Firefox Add-ons area. It is pretty privacy friendly out of the box, and we discussed how to use it a bit, but probably revisit this at some later time.

The main password manager we discussed was KeePassXC and it can be found here. On computers, there is also an add-on for firefox (and librewolf and brave) that connects to the password manager and allows you to auto fill in the username and password for websites you login to. The user guide for this password manager is here.

See the write-up from our last meetup to see the list of Pixel phones we discussed.
