Last year we ran several Gympie Digital Privacy User Group (GDPUG) meetups and found that the content I was providing went over the heads of some folk. My apologies for that. After the feedback I received, I have come up with a new format for the meetups that should help more people understand the digital privacy landscape and apply it to their lives.
We will also be trialing some changed meetup times as follows:-
- For those wanting a daytime meetup, Saturday from 12:30pm to 3:30pm
There are some Saturdays that we cannot use the hall. Join our newsletter (bottom of page) to get updates. - For those wanting a week night, Tuesday evening from 5:30pm to 8:30pm
You are welcome to attend all 3 hours or just the sessions you are interested in. There will be a 10-15 minute break between each hour's session.
Subjects discussed will depend on attendees questions, but as a guide:-
1st hour: Beginners
- Terminology and what it means
- What things affect our privacy
- Why do we need digital privacy
- How does browsing, messaging and email work
- Basic habits we can use to improve our privacy
2nd hour: Intermediate
- What apps are safe and how to install them
- What settings need to be fixed and what add-ons (extensions) are useful
- What cloud things are safe
- What things to absolutely avoid
- What effect does AI have on your devices and can you trust it
- What open source apps are great replacements for commercial software on phones, tablets, and computers
3rd hour: Advanced
- If members don't want the below stuff, we can extend the 2nd hour and have more discussions around topics explored there
- De-googling phones - how it is done
- What phones can be de-googled
- What is Linux and which distributions are best to use
- How is Linux installed
- How to run our own cloud and communication servers
Meetups will be held at the Veteran Hall (View on openstreetmap.org {new tab})
598 Sandy Creek Road Veteran 4570
These meetups are by donation at this time. Please consider the hall rental costs and my time and give generously so I can continue to help as many folks as possible.
Look forward to seeing you all there.
